Carenet Article Examines Benefits of Patient-Generated Health Data

A July 12th article posted by Carenet examines the benefits and barriers to patient-generated health data (PGHD). Citing a recent Ericsson ConsumerLab study which found that one in two consumers believe that wearables (Fitbits, smart watches, and a wide variety of apps) can improve healthcare management, while 60 percent of consumers felt they can help lead to a healthier lifestyle.Such data can empower people to take greater control of their health, make more informed decisions and become more engaged in their healthcare. Sharing such data with providers can supplement existing clinical data, filling in gaps and providing a more comprehensive picture of a patient’s ongoing health. The author also notes that a personalized, collaborative approach with providers is key for success, one that includes mutual goal setting and shared decision making.
